Thanks John for the t-shirt.

Winter Breakfast Suggestion

A healthy post-run breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated. One of the easiest meals I make is -> Cream of Wheat. Not the lumpy old fashioned kind your Mom made, but an instant version that cooks right in your bowl.
Just add boiling water and stir it up!
I buy the unsweetened [plain] kind. And augment it with a tablespoon of raisins and a handful of grape nuts.

I serve it hot with Soya milk.

Its 100 calories deliver:
8 essential vitamins and minerals
Including:
Iron (45% of daily requirement)
Calcium (20% of daily requirements.
On the side I usually have a slice toast or cracker with peanut butter for protein.

My Warm Socks

Sliding into weeks 5-8 of Jack Daniel’s running program. Mileage looks about the same. The set I did today Included a 2 miler set at tempo pace with a 2 min rest then a 1 miler at tempo pace.
I found even after the 10 minute warm-up it took me awhile to get up to my cruising pace.
Probable causes:

  • I raced last week.
  • It's cold out.
  • No pre coffee rush.
I plan on starting back with Galloway's halfmarathon training Jan 1st 2008. I kind of miss those long slow runs…

BTW. One interesting discovery about interval training - it causes weight loss. I’m slipping below 120 despite the holiday snacking. So if you’re looking to lose weight add some interval sets into your weekly runs.

Yesterday’s Highlights

2007 Turkey Trot
This year they used an RFID system to gather race results. Calling it the Full Automatic Timing (FAT)

This image shows the sensor on the back of my race bib.

Unfortunately there were no detectors at the start. (Duh) So people not at the start line when the gun went off, had incorrect times.
I always set my “on body watch” at the start line and then click it as I cross the finish line for my official time!

The race started slowly -> 1200 entries. I passed 2 girls dressed as foliage…A female wearing a running skirt but she had tights on.
(Did I mention it was only 28F?)

A memorable moment came when I caught up to a young boy – I’d guess around 8 years old, at the 2.5 mile mark. He looked over at me and said, "I feel like I’m going to faint.” I told him to slow down a bit and shorten his stride. (Yeah, like I know what I’m doing.) He just smiled and waved me on. A couple minutes later he zoomed by me – I gave him the thumbs up as he just kept going, crossing the finish line 5 seconds in front of me. Fantastic!

Absolutely an acceptable race for me. I trimmed an amazing 45 seconds off my previous time and placed!
All this with no coffee on board.

Mind Over Matter

Pre-race Cognitive therapy...
Not all my thoughts are beneficial.

arrowThe Good

  • I’ve set an obtainable goal – beat my PR by 15 seconds. No problem!
  • My new running pants are like a magic carpet.
  • The runner who passes me has a tractor beam that will tow me along.
  • Every time I smile at someone –they too will have an enjoyable run.
  • I look great.

arrowThe Bad
  • If I don’t beat my PR I’m a loser.
  • I didn’t sleep well – so my run will lack luster
  • I wasted my youth - I’m too old to see any improvements.
  • Who really cares if I run faster anyways? Does it really matter?
  • My shoes are too damn big!

What do you think about before a race?

Not on my Christmas List

A bottle that monitors my water intake – >
sip by sip.
I just weaned myself off the
"Drinking 8 Glasses of Water a Day" syndrome.
I now have a couple of good gulps when I wake up and then a glass or two after I run. I let the rest of the day's hydrations just occur.

Note if your urine is dark yellow (not from Vitamins) you need more fluids.

The Skinny on the ACL

A torn ACL is not a typical running injury – but after seeing this injury happen to one of my favorite QBs, I think a closer look might be worthwhile. (And help the grieving process…)
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament is one very important component of the knee.

It keeps the knee steady and prevents overextension (OUCH!) The knee is not a socket joint, but a hinge joint. In the diagram you can see the end of the femur just rests on top of the tibia. (Like on stilts.) There is no socket to hold the femur in place. Ligaments must do that job.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) provides almost 90% of the stability to the knee joint. - ehealthMD
So you can see why a tear or a total detachment is a serious injury. Your knee is no longer stable. And unfortunately it won’t heal on its own. Reconstructive surgery must be done to reattach the ligament to the bone. Rehab up to 6 months!
Ligaments are dense structures of connective tissue that fasten bone to bone. –ehealthMD
So as you head down the road today remember just how truly miraculous your knee joints are!

Lonely Run

Where are all the runners? Pacing the river path I suppose. I love running beside the river but have to jump in a vehicle to get there. I could run to the path [Hell I ran 13.1 miles once] but takes up too much time, so stayed in the hood.
Noted:: warming up is taking longer – possibly the colder weather, but I think it’s the lack of caffeine. God I miss my pre-run cup.

Female Stress Fractures

Reading about stress fractures. Few interesting tidbits I did not know.
There are two types:
1. Fracture bone fatigue
2. Insufficiency bone fatigue

I thought it was just an overuse syndrome – namely fracture fatigue. But the other cause, insufficiency, is seen in females with menstrual irregularities. “Also seen in post-menopausal whose bones are deficient in mineral or elastic resistance.”
The recommended treatment is rest from usual weight-bearing activity for about four-to-eight weeks. Yikes!

Luckily stress fractures amount to only 10% of total running injuries.

Suggestions to prevent stress fractures include:

- Buy less expensive shoes and change them frequently.
[ I need new shoes.]
- Don’t train continuously on hard surfaces.
- Monitor calcium intake (And find out what foods cause calcium loss.)

Vegetarian Foods that contain Calcium:

Sesame seeds, kelp, collards, kale, almonds, filberts, parsley, garbanzo beans, soymilk.

Importance of Vitamin D

Have a great Monday!

One More Week Completed

Today I completed the third week of Jack Daniels running formula. It looks like my body is adjusting nicely – no injuries. The tempo pace is now a comfortable cruising speed.
I have a race in 2 weeks – It will be interesting to see improvements if any.

Listened to a podcast by Adam and Mattie and of Filmspotting today on my run. These guys are the most knowledgeable reviewers I’ve heard. I love how they disagree. Worth the listen!

The Small Things

“Take time out to reflect, review and realize something new at least once a day.”

They call it retrospective processing. [The gang at relax7.]
Today’s realization – I can still run efficiently without a cup of coffee in my body. In fact; I run better without the effects of the Caffeine on my heart. [Caffeine increases the levels of cAMP in the heart cells, mimicking the effects of epinephrine.]
I know this seems a little simple but we should pay attention to the small things daily and try to find answers before it’s too late.

The caffeine molecule is structurally similar to adenosine, and binds to adenosine …Therefore, caffeine acts as a competitive inhibitor. The reduction in adenosine activity results in increased activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine, largely accounting for the stimulatory effects of caffeine. - Wiki

Setting Small Goals

After reading this yesterday, I felt a little disheartened. Lance Armstrong improved his time by 13 minutes at the New York City Marathon.

13 minutes - Holy Cow!

(Well he is younger than me…and probably spends more training than I do sleeping.)
I took my times from a race that I’ve run 6 years in a row and made a graph. It shows major peaks and valleys.

My goal is to trim at least 15 seconds off last year’s time. (I will be 5 weeks into the Jack Daniel's running program.) This year it will be a chip timed race! So no worries about starting at the back of the crowd.
A small goal I know, but as you get older these are easier to achieve.

Finding our Way

Most runners are explorers. Many times we head out, not really knowing where we are going. While searching for the best route we memorize our surroundings as they pass by… We make mental notes of beautiful ditches and yards or of severed trees and car crashes.
I compare running to exploring. I run down alleys, through orchards – I search for places of solitude or bustle.
Many of us journal our runs or visualize them on maps like Google Earth so we can share with others. They are important to us. Like the tradition of ancient explorers we feel the need to validate our voyages.

Commentary on Olympians

I was sad to hear one of the runners during the Olympic trials has died.
Ryan Shay was only 28.
Were we meant to run faster than a cheetah? I don’t think so. Our make up provides us with upright bipedal power for movement.

“… bipedal speed appears less fast than the maximum speed of quadrapedal movements.” - Wiki
But when it comes to the Olympics, push comes to shove. The athletics are under pressure to beat previous records – to be better than the Olympians before. They amaze us with their fortitude and courage. Anyone who has run a marathon knows just how tough it can be on the body, mind and spirit.
Were we meant to run faster than a cheetah? I don’t think so...

2008 Olympic games in Beijing

Meb Keflezighi came in 8th and will not be going to the Olympics next year> He won silver in 2004 Olympic marathon event. His comments after today’s race.
“Like Alan said, I'd like to congratulate the top 3 finishers. I hope they go on to Beijing to represent our country at the highest level they can. It's going to be different than today but hopefully they'll get it done. For me, it was rough. I love New York. They were telling me I love you Meb. I cried. I'm not 24. I would like to have made the team. At about 1:19, both of my calves cramped up. My breathing was great, but I couldn't go on."
