End of The Year Totals

Looking over the months - the reality of all the miles soak in.

I could have run from Eugene, Oregon to Salt Lake City! (Almost)
What a wonderful injury free year I have had.
I am content as I look forward to many new days of running and exploring.
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year with abundant miles.

Reflection on Running

This morning, before my run, I watched a thought-provoking slide show by Titonet.
Image Titonet
He had sent me an email link thanking me for inspiring him.
I guess he watched my Ten Things I’ve Learned From Running.
After watching his slide show I realized, that lately, I have been taking my running for granted. And I this is not a good thing.
In the New Year I’m going to make a regular habit of gratitude.

“Every morning, before you get out of bed; think of something you’re thankful for.”

Finish Up Training Week

I will be finishing up with my training with the Jack Daniels’ Running formula this week... I’ve run about 10 weeks following his Intermediate Red program. It’s been tough but well worth trying out.

Here are a few benefits I found following his routine:

Zero Boredom
I was constantly checking the Garmin for my speed so I would maintain a tempo pace. Plus looking forward to the next rest zone. Running a 2 mile Tempo is not as easy as it appears.
Finish Strong
I found in the 3 races I completed during the training I felt stronger than usual at the finish line.
Weight Loss
If you need to lose a few pounds this is the way to go. I dropped down to 118.
Learn Your Pace
By the third week, I could tell the difference between 8:00 min mile and an 8:30 min mile.
Faster Cruising Time
Discovered my slow pace now is actually 30 seconds faster than previous. Great!

Next week I will start up the half-marathon training program by Galloway in prep for the Eugene Marathon race in May.

Now it's time to get under the tree and shake presents. Have a great Christmas *

Today's Run Was a Push

Today’s run was a push. My hamstrings were a tad sore from yesterday’s workout. I fought hard against a strong headwind but still couldn’t maintain my tempo pace on the last interval. Crap ~
Still very thankful... I did not get rained on.
I listened to positive podcast on That's Fit by Fitz.
One of her quotes - >“You are the CEO of your body.” Love it.
It’s so easy to forget we are in control.

Age Graded Calculator

Check this page out if you want to know how fast you should be running. Its formula is based on achievement percentile for your age group. Kewl
You just enter your age - race distance and time and presto! Just like looking into a crystal ball.
For my current age - I was Local Class in all my categories – 1 miler to half-marathon. That made my day.award

  • Over 90% --- World Class
  • Over 80% --- National Class
  • Over 70% --- Regional Class
  • Over 60% --- Local Class

Ever Had a Post-race Massage?

The tables are usually set up in tents – which provide little or no privacy. The runners lay prone getting their sore legs pummeled while watchers pass by.
It’s generally a free service offered by PT or massage therapists. I just have never had enough nerve to surrender to such affairs in public.

Benefits of a Post Race Massage
  • slows down the onset of post race muscle stiffness. (Massage apparently helps flush out that nasty lactic acid.)
  • reduce muscle spasms – by increasing blood flow and oxygen.
  • break up scar tissue – ouch!
  • improve flow of lymphatic fluid, which aids in healing.
  • improve range of motion and muscle flexibility. (This sounds rather beneficial.)
  • shorten recovery time between workouts.
  • it feels great!
So I’m going to incorporate this into my list of fresh experiences for the New Year.

Jump-start the New Year

scuba clipartOn the treadmill at the local fitness center I have a fantastic view of the pool. On Thursday I noticed two people in Scuba Diving gear - tanks etc. Their dark shapes grazing the bottom of the pool. [I wonder how the on top swimmers felt.]
Anyways that got me thinking about the New Year- 2008. I should be trying something different.

To quote Craig Harper, “Get uncomfortable on a regular basis. Take risks. Physically, emotionally, psychologically and professionally… Safe is boring and unrewarding."

Working on my list Craig... Drive a segway, vespa, UPS truck, forklift. Try out for soccer, boxing, rollerblading. Attempt karaoke, foreign travel. Volunteer as a Barista. Enroll in a class, the Dark Ages, archeology, shipwrecks, bird identification?
Escape shyness and explore life.

How I Stay Warm

snowmanIt’s about this time of year when I start to yearn for those warm summer day. Just slip on shorts and a t-shirt and head out for a run. Nothing to pile on except the sunscreen.

When it drops below freezing (0 Celsius) I have to dig out the extra stuff.

  • Under shirt – I have cotton and silk ones - sleeveless.
  • Cotton long sleeve shirt.
  • Fleece vest – a new addition I greatly appreciate. And I love having extra pockets.
  • Rayon running pants - baggy.
  • Headwear- the earband if it’s windy out.
  • Gloves – I end up taking them off as I warm up.
  • Warmer socks - runners are not that insulated.

Does Running Age You?

It’s ok for males to sport a few gray hairs and a few intelligent wrinkles, but for woman – noway; we look old.
I was stunned when I saw a picture of Joan Benoit Samuelson on the cover of the latest Runner’s World. She looks about 70 years old! The article was called -> Joanie At 50:

It might just be genetics, but could all those miles of training also contribute to her weathered look?
I know for sure just being outside in the elements can affect our skin. The UVA rays penetrate deep even on cloudy days. So always wear sunscreen on your face, neck and hands.
And Joanie; “I assume it doesn’t matter what we look like in the end, but how great we feel.”
Joan was the FIRST WOMAN to win an Olympic Gold Medal for the Marathon. (1984)

Santa Sighting

Jingle Bell Run Eugene, Oregon 2007

Yes – Santa was hanging out at the finish line – looking a tad skinnier than last year. HO HO
Had a decent run despite earlier conditions…a right eyeball headache and female issues. Plus my run pants had a severe case of “static cling!” I might as well have ran in tights.
The course was wonderful. Dry. We ran along the river, crossing two foot bridges. Out on a log three great Blue Herons turned in unison to watch me pass. Like I said -> wonderful.
Other extras - seeing Santa – propane torch heaters, double shot Americano and some new bling.

Want to Look Like a Spartan?

Wallpaper image from 300

These bodies were not just a product of CGI but intense workouts!
While running this morning I listened to a podcast interview with Robbie Durand. (Exercise Scientist and Nutrition Expert)

He said these guys and gals trained up to 5 hours a day. And only 2 of the hours were spent sparing with blades etc…

Durand explains what worked for these guys was sleep, (yeah - a good nights sleep) proper diet, (I won’t get into his low carb promotion) and intense workouts in the weight room. By intense he means fast turnover rates – no lagging, chatting or resting in between sets. Just keep going like a maniac.

Obviously hard work builds muscle -> losing weight gives definition. Something to think about on gym days.

Hey Robbie, I need help with my triceps. I do dips and kickbacks to no avail.

How Many Miles Have U Run?

How many miles have you run so far this year?
It’s that time of year when we start looking at our grand total.
I want to hear everyone’s totals so far. I’m hitting 770 this week.

[BTW:: There are only about 27 days left in the year 2007.]

Today’s run was speedy with the big winds and rain, I just want to get home fast. Tempo pace 8:35 Which is amazing considering my wet clothes, including hat, weighed about 10 pounds. My pockets even filled with water causing me to carry my player in my hand. With any luck it will dry out and be happy again.

start to finish

puddles far and wide
gutters plugged with leaves
fallen tree busted in the creek
a rogue Santa…

Buying Shoes Online

clipartDo you buy your shoes online? In the change room I overheard a comment from a lady who bought all her shoes online. She said she orders up to 8 pairs and then returns the ones that don’t fit. Apparently, where she shops, they have a FREE return policy.

I’m nervous about buying shoes online even if I know the exact style and size. Maybe I have a foot fetish, but each shoe is like starting a new relationship. Shopping for runners is not easy. I frequently feel pressured to like their shoe choices. “This is what runners with high arches wear.” I am so particular on how a shoe feels, I’ve been know to leave the store emptied handed and despondent.

So maybe I should give the online shoe shopping a try. I can leisurely try them out around the house and then make a decision.
I need to find an online store that tenders Hassle FREE returns.
