I Love Outside

Outside MagazineWho needs Runner’s World when you have Outside!
Reasons I Love Outside
They cover all the bases – hiking, biking, fitness - real nice pictures, must go destinations and even book reviews!
(Plus - Very little marathon chatter.)
This months issue includes the much anticipated

Part Two – The pillars of fitness.

I really like the weekly workout suggestions:

Good old LSD - Apparently not as renowned as it once was.
Core and Strength Work – Done on days you are NOT running! (Like twice a week.)
Intervals - Including max (fast) and threshold (still fast) levels.
Started this challenging workout today! I will include just one interval session a week – then work up to 2, as suggested, if I don’t injured or exhausted.

Pick up this months issue for details. Outside May 2009

The DailyMile

OneMile Logo
Yes, I’ve joined yet another online running faction. I find these sites helpful for training ideas and moral support.
Dailymile is not just for runners.
“A premier destination for runners, cyclists, and triathletes.”
You can leave notes, post your workout, and include photos or video. And of course there is forum to cover all your bases.
I’m still new to the site – but really like the simple layout.
And Hey, I found a runner who lives in Eugene.
If you need an invite to join, email me.

Running Hot

I'm really not acclimated to running with sun rays beaming directly on my body. Welcome to the first day of summer! It just sapped the energy right out of me. Luckily I had Steve’s new podrunner mix, “paradiddle” with that jungle beat to bring me home.
Thankful notes:
It wasn’t really that hot out and the breezes were delicious.

Running, Reflection and Writing

I don’t pretend to be a great writer and that’s why I read books like this - Writing Without Teachers.
In school I was drawn to the sciences – not the arts. So here I am – older than many and still can’t write a proper paragraph.
But Elbow explains the structure and housekeeping work of writing is the last thing you should worry about.
He stresses the importance of freehand writing. Just sit back let the stuff pour out. (I suppose you should use a pen but I’m more comfortable with MS Word.) And then go back over the material. Is there a main point or topic? If so write it down. Use this sentence as the focus and try to expand on it. Then and only then do outlines, corrections, editing, etc…
This style of writing sounds so relaxing. The only problem I see is the lack of time to spread out all my thoughts.

The Importance of Running Roots

sky and bird

We all have aches and pains and injuries; (please don’t say that word out loud) but during my runs I don’t focus on them. As an older runner I accept these feelings as part of the process. I’M A RUNNER.

Conversely
, the early years of my running tribulations are always simmering on the back burner. How I gasped for breath; how my lungs burned, as I attempted to run a single block. I would get up while it was still dark to run – so no one could see what a washout I was. These memories are important. They remind me how far I’ve come and how I never gave up.

Heather shares her beginnings in an article called, “A Runner is Born”. I especially love the wisdom in her conclusion.

Faith...
I could do this. As long as I had faith, I could be a runner."

13 Words or Less...

Runner’s Lounge theme for this Thursday is: "In 13 words or less...share your best lesson you have learned about running."

The best lesson I learned from years and years of running...

When the run gets tough, shorten my stride and look above the horizon.
