Today's run takes me through the Delta Ponds. No turtles or frogs this time of year, just the bows of a Great Heron. This area of Eugene was once the corridor for the Willamette River. Damming to prevent floods changed the river's course - leaving a rich habitant for flora and fauna.
Then a mining operation in the 1950s ensued - digging large pits for aggregate. Notably, when these pits were abandoned, they filled with water ~ creating ponds. The area is now preserved. And with constant maintenance, will become a natural wetland once again.
