RUN

RUN

  • R is for racking up the miles. I don’t have a running total from the very beginning (of time) but since 2002, I’ve put on 5005 miles.
  • U is for understanding. You will slow down eventually. SO - > “Always do whatever's next." - George Carlin
  • N is for never. Never forget why you love running.

Set By Example

Today is National Run Day. If you don’t believe me, check Twitter’s Trending Topics.

I still remember when I first got involved in running. Everyday, driving to work, I would see a guy running steadily up the road towards the park. In rain, traffic, or misty mornings, he would always emerge. I was envious. He made running look easy! I, on the other hand, could not even round a full block and I had to go to work!
I would say out loud, “Maybe tomorrow, I will give it a try.”
Well I found out quickly that running was not that easy to start with. It took years to get my body where it is today.
His dedication to the sport of running will always be with me. And I would like dedicate today’s run to him - for showing me the way.

Juneathon Day 3 Running
Ran 6.1 miles along sheltered paths and cemented sidewalks. There was an abundance of walkers…didn’t see any runners : ( But I did see the Sheriff pass by twice – so I was on the alert for any unsavory activities. (Or maybe, he was just checking out my legs.)
Temp was in the 60s (f) but the humidity was 93%

“Under conditions of high humidity, the evaporation of sweat from the skin is decreased and the body's efforts to maintain an acceptable body temperature may be significantly impaired.” -Wiki

Might be a good idea to bring water – next time I run in +++ humidity.

Food is Fuel

I always shudder when I hear, what runners eat. Like running gives us the license to eat whatever we want.

But beware – not all calories are equal. Some provide vitamins and nutrients that does a body good while others can virtually kill you.
Like
½ c of Haagen-dazs Crème Brulee ice cream has 19 grams of fat including 120 mg of cholesterol! This stuff can coat the insides your cardiac arteries.
Instead
When I drink carrot juice my face glows.

125 Healthiest Supermarket Foods
Surprisingly, I found this list on healthy eating in Men’s Health magazine. Not that I condone store bought re-fried beans over homemade - but for those who don’t prepare food, this list gives some great suggestions.

And before the big race
"Many runners assume that they must eat a lot of food the night before..... There is nothing you can eat the evening before a race that will help you. But eating to much, or the wrong foods, can be a real problem.”

The Good, the Sad, and the Ugly

Race Recap - 10 mile Pear Blossom race

The Goodmotorcycle cops and runners
  • Was able to connect with other runners in the race using Twitter. Extra fun - a local news station reporter set up a time to interview me via a tweet. (No, I didn’t get my 30 seconds of fame.)
  • Maintained my half-marathon race pace to discover I had lots of steam at the end.
  • I was dressed just right! The weather was perfect for running!
  • Lots of police on motorcycles controlling traffic.
  • Enjoyed seeing old buildings in the city.
  • A young girl was handing out Twizzlers at the 9 mile mark.

The Sadfeet
  • The race organizers did not time the 5k entries. There were over a thousand runners.
  • I did not sleep much the night before – despite bringing my own pillow.
  • Discovered the lotion I used at the hotel, to massage my feet with, was hair conditioner.
  • Witnessed an expensive iPod skip across the asphalt. I wonder if the guy had to run the rest of the race in silence.
  • Spotting the halfway mark in the far distance, after climbing up and over the hill.
  • The post race raisin bread – had no raisins just cinnamon chips. (But still tasted pretty good.)

The Ugly
  • Despite maintaining my half-marathon pace and coming in sooner than expected, I felt deflated when seeing the final race results. I wasn’t even in the top half...

Swag
  • Bright orange hand towel.
